It's been a while, but I couldn't let this gem of a project go unaccounted for. My former boss, mentor and all-around design guru (and funny lady...seriously...you have to follow her Instagram, she's hilarious), Ashley Whittaker, was just featured in this month's House Beautiful. This project is classic Ashley, fun colors, classic design and bold choices that keep it from trailing into granny territory.
Maybe it's because Ashley was the first person I ever worked for, but her designs always feel so "right" to me. Despite the fact that they're maybe a tad formal for my current 20-something-lifestyle, they're always cohesive, beautiful, timeless and also livable. I can always picture myself curled up in one of her spaces enjoying a coffee (or a cocktail).
Long rooms are a challenge and back-to-back sofas are a bold choice (they become super deep, super quickly!). However, this one is just the right size. As always, no detail is overlooked in an AWD room. From the greek key trim on the chairs, to the beautiful (and no doubt custom) lampshades everything is thoughtful and impeccably executed.
Don't have a giant room to design? There are still some ideas from Ashley that you can take away here.
- Side tables are mandatory! Everybody needs a place to set down a drink, and they don't need to match. Here a garden stool mixes beautifully with a bone inlay table and another smaller, darker table in the corner.
- Only have a few dollars to spend? Plants add both color and texture to a space. Take look back. I count 10 plants. If you're on a super budget invest in something small and easy to take care of like succulents or a fern. Splurge on flowers for special occasions. Any plant will make a world of difference.
- Lighting is everything. There should be several sources in every room. Here there are sconces, overhead cans, table lamps and floor lamps. Again, budget doesn't have to kill you here and neither does being in a rental. You can get sconces that plug into the wall and sit beautifully behind a sofa. Urban Outfitters (of all places!) has a fun collection that I often use with my clients who are in rentals.
Another example of a show-stopping plant.
The wallpaper is the scene stealer in this bar. According to the interview, the husband picked it out. I love when a man (or any client really) is excited about a gold choice. This paper makes the room (although the light fixture and the brass sink certainly don't hurt!).
This room kind of reminds me of this space by Ashley (which I absolutely adore). The colors are so warm. The colors make it feel like the perfect place to spend your evenings (and perhaps the entire fall).
Ashley loves a girly bedroom and this one does not disappoint. Those nightstands are stunning and add just enough patina to the space.
You can see Ashley's entire (amazing) portfolio here. Can you tell I miss her?
